Chipping Program

Plumas County Fire Safe Council (PCFSC) Chipping Program

The Plumas County Fire Safe Council provides chipping services:
as an alternative to pile burning - benefiting air quality and reducing risk of escapes
as an alternative to dumping - reducing costs and hauling for residents and keeping green waste out of landfills
as an alternative to no action - incentivizing the creation and maintenance of defensible space

The Plumas County Fire Safe Council Chipping Program is now accepting sign-ups for the 2026 season

This year, the program has been restructured as a cost-share program to help keep chipping services available into the future. Funding for community mitigation programs has become increasingly difficult to secure, and this change is intended to support the long-term sustainability of the program.

The cost-share contribution is $150 per client, and each client is allowed one pile.

Pile Requirements

  • Maximum pile size: 16 linear feet long x up to 12 feet wide x 4 feet high

  • Material length: 3–12 feet long

  • Maximum diameter: 8 inches

  • Natural woody material only

Due to limited funding and operator mobilization costs, very small piles may not be eligible for service. Piles should generally be at least 4 feet long x 3 feet wide x 3 feet high to qualify.

Material that exceeds program limits or does not meet guidelines will be left unchipped.

If you are unable to pay the $150 cost-share contribution due to financial hardship, please contact the Chipping Program Manager at (530) 214-3888 to discuss options.

Thank you for your understanding and for helping us keep this important wildfire risk reduction service available to Plumas County residents.
